The trick is to try hit him as many times you can before he gets whole "bring out ze pillars" part. This is the boss in labyrinth zone. Noticed that you can consistently get 5 hits in at the beggining.
I managed to hit dr. Eggman (aka robotnik) 8 times beat him at very end. But avoiding traps such a pain.
